| The coal dock
in Seward is the connection between the Usibelli coal reserves in
Healy and the rest of the world. Seward's coal terminal is owned
by Hyundai and the state of Alaska and employs about a dozen people.
The company has shipped some 12 million tons of coal to South Korea since 1984. However, Usibelli announced in late March 2003 that its coal export contract with Hyundai would not be renewed. Talks are currently underway to try to renew this relationship. Below are two series of photos that show the Seward coal terminal. The first set is a ground view of the equipment that moves the coal from the yard to the barge. The second photo set gives a "bird's eye" view of the coal yard in both medium and large sizes. Warning: the large format exceed one half a megabyte in size! These photos are intended to educate the railfan and/or serve as a reference for the model railroader. Enjoy! |
