All Trains Are Stopped By Lack of Funds
The Westward Alaskan
Seldovia, Alaska November 5, 1936

The government-operated Alaska Railroad, which is the only scheduled freight and passenger service to interior points, this week discontinued its entire service due to lack of funds. Towns along the railroad are now left dependent on water transportation for goods not transferable by plane.

Possibility of reopening the railroad is dependent on action of Congress, which does not convene until next January.

In a wire to Wasilla, Delegate Dimond pledged his services toward securing an immediate emergency fund but indicated the task would be a difficult one.

The railroad has always operated at a deficit.
