Building Alaska Railroad RSD1 ALCO #1029
by Pat Durand.

A photos roster of Alco locomotives is provided at http://www.alaskarails.org/pix/ARR-picts-old-r.html.

Among those that lasted unmodified on the Alaska Railroad until retirement was #1029. Builders number 70641 came out of the shops in 1942 as US Army 820. In 1950 Alaska Railroad acquired the locomotive under special legislation that allowed military surplus to be directly transfered to the Federally owned railroad. She operated in Blue and Yellow paint until retirement in 1964 and was scrapped after storage at Birchwood in the 1965 to 67 time frame. For several years she worked the

Whittier Yard and was used on the Portage and Anchorage passenger train. Here are three views of #1029 in HO scale. The essence of the RSD1 is captured in a dependable operating model equipped with Tsunami Sound and DCC Decoder.

One more class of locomotives has now been added in my attempt to build on of each class on the ARR in each paint scheme. Here is a link to a little more detail on the construction process and sequence.
