1. In an article in the Feb
issue of Model Railroading, There is an article about Alaska equipment
during the '70's. Included is a 2 bay rib side USRA hopper such as Athearn
produces. They were painted box car red with white lettering. Road #'s
at that time were 5032-5039. They were being used for company coal service.
They were built in 1934 and painted in this scheme in 1957. They were 31'
in length and had a 50t capacity. I'm sure there originally were quite
a few more but were gone by the early 70's.
2. You might want to bring to Kato's attention that if they bring out their business car in a smoothside version, it would be a close match to the Denali car.
3. I think I would like them all.
4. I forgot to mention the 57' reefer. I'm not sure how close it is but would look very good painted in the Alaska scheme.
5. Rerun the 54' covered hopper with the bays and I believe the trucks were painted blue also.
6. I heard Athearn just bought Details West (DW) freight car division, so DW 60í boxcar would be a perfect match for the ARR 60í double plug door insulated boxcar in both blue and the older boxcar red scheme.
7. Athearn makes a 57í mechanical reefer that would be perfect for the Alaska RR orange mechanical reefers of the 1980ís. I don't think they make a hopper, flatcar or a tank car that matches any ARR prototypes. How about semi trailers painted in Span-Alaska or Lynden or Carlyle other Alaska companies??? Athearn makes 40í and 45í semi trailers that would work great for these!
8. I would like a model of the flat cars used for the FOX trains.
Comment: "Selling the Alaska Railroad to a private company would be the final chapter in Alaska Railroads colorful history. It has been tried before and was soundly defeated. Alaskans realize that selling the Alaska Railroad would jeopardize the good jobs, and would only benefit the private owners. Profits would be sent "outside", and attempts to sell off the railroads lands would cripple the railroad's ability to effectively operate. "NO" to the sell of the Alaska Railroad!!!!"
