John's Alaska Railroad trip 2009
My 2009 trip wasn't really an Alaska Railroad trip at all. My wife and I had taken this journey to the Last Frontier to celebrate retired Alaska Railroad yardmaster Don Prince's 80th birthday. Although we spent most of our time with Don, I did happen to slip away for one day to chase trains with railroad employee Dave Blazejewski. Man, do I ever love this railroad!
On November 14, Dave and I chased a loaded coal train from Anchorage to Portage, braving single digit temperatures and 30 mph winds. The unit coal train rain with distributed power and therefore had two SD70MACs on each end. On our drive back to Anchorage, we spotted a unit work train and chased that rascal back down Turnagain Arm. This train featured three locomotives each with a different paint scheme and the last RDC owned by the railroad. Also, just for fun I posted a few of the photos that I took right through the windows of Dave's car.
So no detailed journal this time, just a photo album of pure nirvana.
Many thanks to Dave Blazejewski for an awesome day!
