Loading onto the flat car was the scarey part but no bathroom and being stuck on the trestle between tunnels was the difficult part! But it was sure fun!!!! - Cheryl Lemon Laffranchi

The combines were coupled to one end of the flats, and the caboose to the other end. The conductor and senior brakeman rode the combines, and the junior brakeman rode the caboose. - John Decker

I am interested in these 1972 pictures. I deduce that vehicle traffic was not able to drive through the tunnel at Whittier. So the vehicles were loaded on the trains and taken through the tunnel? I was there 09/19. - John D. Phenicie

Yes, it was quite the project making it accessible for vehicles. Working on Whittier Section prior to this, required catching the last train in on Sunday evening (ya better not miss it, driving from Anchorage) and then parking your vehicle in the ramp line in Whittier on Friday afternoon, so that you could make the first trip out...to head home for the short weekend. - Rick Leggett
