ALCO MRS-1
By Mike Gerenday

A bit over ten years ago I started a little project of tracking down then current photos, drawings, and other technical information regarding ALCO MRS-1 locomotives. At the time I had a well known model train manufacturer interested in producing these locomotives in HO scale. Unfortunately they decided to not continue the project, but they did consider making the MRS-1 in Alaska Railroad and US Army.

During all my research I had reached out to a few museums and tourist railroads that rostered MRS-1s in their collections. Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown, California which operates the Sierra Railway rosters (or did as of 2021) ALCO MRS-1, 613. At the time of my inquiry, Railtown was planning on moving 613 around their yard to their shops and sent me a lot of great close up photos of critical areas such as the trucks and roof.

Arctic Resins released a wonderful Alaska Railroad version MRS-1 kit a couple of years ago, while the Alaska Railroad MRS-1 is extinct, these images will aid in the modeler building the kit.
