Although this picture is familar to many of you, it is of prime importance to the Alaska Railroad. On July 15, 1923 President Warren G. Harding drove the golden spike and thus began an incredible history which has played an important part in many people's lives including my own. Another important event also took place in 1923 (January 6 to be exact) which had a significant impact on my life. This was the birth of my father John S. Combs and it is to him that I dedicate this Picture of the Week. It is with many fond memories and yet great sadness that I honor him in his passing on May 28, 2000. He was an incredible father, mentor and friend. I'm going to really miss you dad.
