Aerial of Anchorage Yard

"Here are photos of the Anchorage yard, taken from the air. All of these were taken in the afternoon, on March 5, 2016. I have been taking flying lessons, and someone I know through that invited me to go with him on a helicopter trip. They were doing tours during Fur Rondy, so I tagged along for one of them. We took off from the roof of the Lofts Hotel (the old Howard Johnson), on Third Avenue. We went east, following Ship Creek, then flew around in the mountains a bit, before heading back along the same route, to the hotel roof to land."

The shop facilities for Anchorage. At the top of the photo is the heavy equipment shop, below which is the diesel shop, back shop, wheel shop, and the shed. The shed is where cars are worked on and where the passenger trains sleep.
Below the shops is the coach yard and the tour company facilities. At the bottom of the photo is the old power plant and Ship Creek. This photo looks approximately geographic north.

Near the center of the photo is the Anchorage Operations Center, which is where the yard office is located. Also in the AOC are the crew locker rooms, crew dispatch,
the train dispatchers, and some other offices. Behind the AOC is the main body of the yard at its widest point.

Across the middle of the photo you will find locomotives parked on the Ready Tracks. Most of those are being stored for the winter right now. In the lower right corner, you can see the AOC.

Saturday afternoon, and there would be no northbound freight that evening, so those cars would stay empty until the next day.

This is the Ship Creek area and downtown Anchorage. The viaduct over the yard, freight depot and passenger depot are all visible.

Downtown Anchorage, with the old freight building and the passenger depot visible on the right. This was during the Fur Rendezvous, and there was a carnival set up in the parking lot at the top of the hill, in front of the passenger depot.

This photo shows the General Office Building and passenger depot. In the background you can also see the New and Old Park Spurs and the Yard Lead, where it crosses Ship Creek.

This is another photo of the passenger depot, baggage tent, and annex. Across the street from the annex (white building left of the depot) is the railroad police headquarters.

This photo looks at the south end of the yard. In the foreground is the Northland container terminal. Behind that is the wye, the warehouse, the viaduct, and the shops. Most of the yard is also visible in the distance. This photo looks geographic east.
