That Sky

That Sky

Sometimes mother nature can turn the simplest scene into something spectacular. Getting out of my car to walk to the office one afternoon I was just taken aback by the spectacular cloud formations. Simply too much temptation to overlook. The MP15 rests on the new Trailer On Flat Car (TOFC) ramp tracks in the parking lot outside the Anchorage Operations Center. Coupled to her is a vintage ex US Navy 50 foot boxcar now used in summertime service hauling baggage overnight to Fairbanks for passengers traveling on Princess and Holland America Lines tours.

Update: in addition to the loss of cabooses and these switchers the 'bag boxes' also disappeared within a couple years as the railroad negotiated with the cruise lines to get them to truck the luggage up the highway all the way from Anchorage. Yet another odd, unique, and fascinating bit of railroading that made the Alaska Railroad special in so many ways that faded away as the the road became ever more homogeneous.
