Down At The Rack

Down At The Rack

Just another simple shot from a dozen years ago that I like. This is one that's never been shared anywhere.

On a bluebird fall afternoon an Anchorage Yard job with a pair of SD70MACs is working the racks at the Flint Hills Loop track down beside Ocean Dock Road in the port area. Back then FHR's North Pole Refinery was going strong and 80 or more tanks of loaded jet fuel, diesel, and gasoline came down nightly comprising a full 40% of the Alaska Railroad's freight revenue. It was hard to fathom at the time that in less than a decade not a drop would be moving south....

But at least you can still get this shot as the loop is still in use and the racks are now used to load product that arrives by pipeline or vessel for shipment north to Fairbanks in a complete reversal of fortune.
