Seward coal

A 74 car unit export coal train sits tied down in track 7 in the Seward yard at the south end of the Alaska Railroad system. The train arrived the previous evening and will be unloaded in just a couple hours after this photo was taken. To the left of the train can be seen the complex of conveyors that climb up from beneath the dump building (the corner of which is visible above the 2nd unit) where the coal is unloaded by employees of Aurora Energy Services. It was cold and windy, but virtually snowless on this Thursday afternoon. Sweet light comes early in Alaska in the winter...this shot was taken around 1:30 PM. Note: the photographer is a railroad employee and was wearing all required PPE while taking this photograph. November 18, 2010
