GP-7 #1808 leads a passenger train through the ghost forest at Portage. The ghost forest was created when the Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964 caused the land's elevation to fall dramatically. Within two weeks of the earthquake, tidewater had reached the forested lands. Nearby homes and businesses in the area found themselves with tidewater surging across their ground floors at high tide. The influx of tidewater forced most owners to move their homes and business to the new site. September 12, 1977.
