On June 5, 2014 I had the good fortune of having a busy morning photographing trains on the Alaska Railroad along Turnagain Arm in sun. It’s been a few years since I’d spent much time along Turnagain Arm. After I left Alaska in July of 1986 my photo trips on the ARR have focused on the Nenana Canyon, my favorite part of the railroad.

It took a while to acquaint myself with the new Seward Highway route between Girdwood and Bird, but I’m starting to relearn the line. The ARR passenger trains of today may lack the authentic funkiness of the Whittier Turn, they are better looking and quite a bit more frequent.

On this particular morning, I chased the Coastal Classic from Potter to Portage and then headed back north to catch a Whittier bound freight running ahead of the Glacier Discovery.
