Here are a couple shots taken of a northbound Whittier train, taken on a Sunday afternoon in March of 1986. After photographing the Shuttle heading into Whittier from Mt. Maynard (the Whittier tunnel) I walked across the valley and climbed the hill. I image you don’t see many shots of Placer Creek from this angle. This freight came out ahead of the Shuttle, so this was an unexpected bonus.

The Shuttle was behind the freight and ran to Portage and the freight worked in the Portage yard. That gave me time to get back across the lake, into my car, and on to the Seward Highway. I was able to walk in and get the shot of the train crossing the Twenty-Mile River Bridge northbound.

These are two of my all-time favorite shots of the ARR.
