MP G24

Dylan Robert, our man on the ground at Eielson Branch, caught this very unique and intriguing photo.

Monday, 25 September 2023: Alaska Railroad Corporation Fairbanks Yard Job heads railroad South passing MP G24 on the ARRC’s Eielson Branch. The crew had just exited Eielson AFB at MP G24.5 and are headed back to Fairbanks after dropping a handful of loaded coal cars for the United States Military Railroad (USMR). This days yard job power was GP38-2’s 2003 and 2004. The USMR has a small yard located on Eielson at MP G28 where the two railroads exchange cars. The USMR employs two GP40-2’s numbers 4902 and 4903 in order to serve the base’s needs. Their main job is to unload coal for the small Central Heat and Power Plant that powers the base. In addition they do any other odd moves the base needs and in the summer months they often handle many contaminated dirt gondolas for Eielson. In the past they have unloaded jet fuel by rail however that has now ended all though the unloading racks remain ready in case the need ever arises in the future.https://flic.kr/p/2pa91uE
