The Backshop

The Backshop

Here's another from this same day wandering around the shop long ago.

Alaska Railroad GP38-2 2002 (built November 1978 as Butte, Anaconda and Pacific 109 and coming to Alaska in 1986) and SD70MAC 4006, the Spirit of Anchorage, (built January 2000 new for the railroad) rest inside the back shop on a quiet Saturday evening. The ARRC has full rebuild capabilities and facilities far larger than typical short lines of comparable size. Despite it's diminutive system of just over 500 miles, it looks and acts like a Class One, largely a legacy of its history and its isolation from the rest of the North American rail network.
