Nineteen Car Star

Nineteen Car Star

Here is another look back long ago to a glorious summer afternoon out on the wilds of Fort Richardson back when you could just wander around the vast empty land of the US Army post. Here is the caption I wrote at the time long ago when this was originally shared on RP.

Two SD70MACs wheel the 19 car and nearly 1800 foot long pride of the Alaska Railroad fleet southbound at nearly 60 MPH. The Denali Star (train 230S) makes a 12 hour and 356 mile run to and from Fairbanks 7 days a week between mid May and mid September. It is a ride not to be missed! Here the train is passing through the wildlands of the Fort Richardson Army Base north of Reeves Siding about 15 miles north of the train's destination at the Anchorage Historic Depot.
