In the photo above, notice the truck trailer behind the locomotives. Although railroads in the lower 48 states concentrate on piggy-back service for the long-distance market, the Alaska RR is able to provide this sort of service over their line as well. Dick Morris, who is a volunteer at the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry reports that the "Anchorage to Fairbanks road is mostly two lane and driving it can be a real challange during the winter. Quite a bit of freight goes piggypack....Dual 40 foot trailers are common on that road (I don't know how they do it) and make the truckers more competitive."
