WASILLA, ALASKA: WHERE THAT LONESOME WHISTLE BLOWS

Don’t let this train passing through Wasilla on its way to pick up another load of gravel fool you. The position of locomotive ARR 4016 might cause you to believe this train is traveling in the opposite direction than it really is.

The northbound gravel train passes between Lake Lucille and the Parks Highway.

I would advise anyone contemplating a swim in Lake Lucille not to do it. Unbeknownst to just about everyone, a 40-foot-long spotted Alaska lake shark lurks in these waters. It only needs to eat once every 99 years, but if I understand correctly and I’m pretty darn sure I do, it last ate 98.999 years ago.
