Portraying the various types of work and special challenges that occur along the rails of the Alaska Railroad
In 1985 or 1986, an avalanche came down all the way across the valley just north of Grandview siding and covered the track. A southbound train headed for Seward ran into it in a heavy snowstorm without even realizing it until the locomotive started lifting up on the snow and coming to rest about 10 feet from the tracks. Re-railing the locomotive consisted of about 30 men digging it out so that the hydraulic Hosch jacks could be used. |
