In 1985 or 1986, an avalanche came down all the way across the valley just north of Grandview siding and covered the track. A southbound train headed for Seward ran into it in a heavy snowstorm without even realizing it until the locomotive started lifting up on the snow and coming to rest about 10 feet from the tracks. Re-railing the locomotive consisted of about 30 men digging it out so that the hydraulic Hosch jacks could be used.
