Portraying the various types of work and special challenges that occur along the rails of the Alaska Railroad
Down tie crew: This photo was taken in 1980 of the 'down tie crew' on Extra Gang #4. This is a very physical job that requires the crew to carry a lining bar, claw bar, track jack, track shovel and spike maul to pick up and tamp any ties that have fallen down after the track was surfaced. The carrying of the tools was usually split between the employees except when Clay (between the rails in the photo) would, on occasion, grab a track jack in each hand with a lining bar under each arm and start marching down the track to the next tie. |
