Portraying the various types of work and special challenges that occur along the rails of the Alaska Railroad
Changing ties in the Anchorage yard: This photo was taken in Anchorage Yard in 1980. On Tie Extractor-3 is Eddie Garrett (now deceased), who was also known as "The Rock." This nickname was well deserved for a number of reasons. Not only did Eddie exemplify the term "hard working railroader," he was also "Soldier of the Month" twice while serving in the Army at Ft. Richardson. Eddie is a legend to those who knew him for his ability to drive 2 spikes, on opposite sides of the rail, with a maul in each hand faster than most people could put down one spike. Behind Eddie in the photo, holding a set of tie tongs, is David Reintsma. |
