The ARR spreader #1 illustrated here is actually a Mann-McCann spreader.   See C. S. Small's "Rails to the Diggings" pages 158-60.  The Panama Canal Commission had 19 of these, along with 5 Jordans.  Mr. Small states that the Mann-McCanns were significantly heavier than the Jordans, and presumably much more effective for spreading very large quantities of waste on rapidly expanding dumps.   This suggests that they were not intended as RR spreaders, but designed for handling waste on the dumps of large open pit mines.  It is clear that the railroads preferred the Jordan, as a lighter and more versatile machine, although the ARR seems to have never purchased the ditching option. -- Commentary by John Stutz
