Billboard Boxcar
Photographs courtesy of Don Marenzi

Following up on Mike Gerenday's post about the billboard painted ARR boxcars: there were two cars displayed at Anchorage across from the depot. You can see both in the first photo; 1510's nose is hiding most of one. Also pix of both 10312 and 10434. I took these photos in early September 1983. Perhaps there were others at other locations. These cars were pure billboards in that paint scheme; they couldn't (or shouldn't have) been used in service due the lack of required side reporting marks and data.

Ian Frazier adds: If you look at the rail under the cars it is cut at both ends. They weren’t used in service because they were stuck right there. I do believe once they took them out of billboard service they did start revenue service again. And all FRA markings were put back on.
