Misc. notes / comments :
Place is setup with gift shop on East side / museum on west side / Staffer stays upstairs in summer
Staffer working there grew up in Nenana, but normally lives in Anchorage, but comes to Nenana in summer
Place built in 1922, and was used as a functioning station until the agent there retired in 1983
Was interesting to see the functional mechanics of the semaphore signals – the building side levers make an in-out motion, and then the rocker arm at the base of the signal translates that to an up-down motion.
Looking at the inside/outside of the 1922 construction, was entertaining to see it as:
A historical example of a good-ol-fashioned railroad station, with an operator station, passenger depot and less then carload freight handling
A rickety building that has outlived it’s usefulness with
Centralized traffic control
Intermodal, truck/trailer handled freight
The passenger waiting room is still relevant, but looking down main street, didn't look like a whole lot of people were making Nenana their tourist destination of choice.
Single pane windows and coal fired stoves more appropriate for Oklahoma then Alaska
