Portraying the various types of work and special challenges that occur along the rails of the Alaska Railroad
|
This photo was taken looking railroad south toward the north end of Garner Tunnel. The purpose of the inspection can be seen on the ties as a car had derailed in the curve just north of the tunnel and was drug about two miles. This curve was notorious for severe subsidence and developing excessive cross-level in a very short period of time. After being started many years ago, a track realignment toward the river is now completed and the track no longer goes through the tunnel. |
