All in a Day's Work

Portraying the various types of work and special challenges that occur along the rails of the Alaska Railroad

Dunbar Derailment: There's nothing like getting a call just as you're walking out of the house to go to a picnic on Memorial Day (1990) and being told that there is a major derailment (around 15 cars if I remember correctly) and a major fuel spill (estimated at +-100,000 gallons). Within 2 hours four of us left Anchorage in a helicopter for a 300 mile flight (we had to refuel in Denali Park) only to land in what was then the second largest oil spill in the state's history (the Exxon Valdez was the year before). It took all summer to clean up the area and was monitored for years after that.
