1841

Here's an image of USAF 1841 in the Fairbanks yard in July of 1983. The stack is capped, so it looks to be out of service at this date.

US Air Force Locomotive #1841 is a Baldwin S-12 built during the 1950's by Baldwin Locomotive Works. The Baldwin S-1s2 were intended as yard switching locomotive. The Air Force had two in their inventory #1841 and #1842, both are on display at the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry in Wasilla, Alaska. The U.S. Air Force used the locomotives at Eielson to transport coal to the generating plant.

Added by Bob Garner 12/27/13: I was looking at the write up on the S-12's and would like to add that they were also used to move the many tank cars of jet fuel, gasoline, (we had our own gas station on base) and diesel fuel that we used to offload almost every day that I worked in Fuels Storage. They also moved general cars around for the Supply Squadron warehouse and to our oil supply building. We did receive fuel from the Army at times through a pipeline, but that was only to keep the fuel in the lines fairly fresh. Not quite sure if they still use tank cars. They probably upgraded the pipeline and receive it that way now. It's been 40 years since I was there.
