Amtrak 320

F40PH #320 in the Whittier yard after being offloaded from the rail barge the morning of 6/27/01.  The engines were dead in tow but Shane was able to get pictures of them at the point of a freight train.  Units 315 and 320 are on temporary lease until the railroad's own rebuilt units (3013, 3014 and 3015) arrive later in July. Since there is no nose door, they will operate back to back with the SD70MAC's in passenger service.

Added 9/13/21: Retired VP Pat Shake added: The Korean built passenger cars were the first that needed external electrical power. Therefore, we needed something with generators. We obtained 3 axel Amtrak F40s on loan. The 3 axel units rode rough and beat up the mainline. We returned these units for Amtrak 236 and 244 which had 2 axles. These were satisfactory so we sent them for $400-$600K rebuilds which included ballasting.
