ALCO MRS1 #1604 photographed by Ken Brovald in January 1976 while
in winter storage. ALCO designated these multiguage locomotives RSX4
when built for the US Army Military Railway Service in 1953. A bakers
dozen,1601-1612 + a parts unit, were sent to Alaska in 1974 and 1975 during
the pipeline construction boom. USA #B2054 became Alaska #1604
and was retired in 1984. Typical ALCO's they darkened the skies with
exhaust while switching the Anchorage yard, keeping their reputation as
"Honorary Steam Engines". None of the ALCO units survive in Alaska,
however the even rarer EMD MRS1 #1718 is in operation at the Museum of
Alaska Transportation and Industry.
