Number 1512 was purchased new in 1953 (builder number 19065).  It was sold to the Wyoming and Colorado (1, 2, 3) in 1986 who sold it to Verde Canyon Railroad in 1996.  Regardless of owner, it has always been #1512.    Click here for more information on the Alaska Railroad bicentennial paint scheme.
On March 11, 1960 at 6:45 p.m., the southbound Fairbanks-to-Anchorage passenger train headed by #1512 was involved in a freak accident.  Sixteen miles north of Wasilla, near Houston, the locomotive struck a moose, throwing it into the switch.  The weight of the moose threw the switch open and caused #1512 to derail.  The locomotive fell on its side, but fortunately no one was injured.
