3,862 F7s were built between November of 1948 and December 1953 which is more than all the other F units combined. Fifty-nine railroads purchased the F7s new and many other railroads acquired them used. The F7 was primarily a freight engine, but could be modified for high speed passenger service and equiped with a steam generator. Top initial owners include:
