Alaska Department of Transportation

The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, also known as the Whittier Tunnel, remains closed until further notice due to a rock fall hazard inside the tunnel. The tunnel was closed at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25.

A geologist with the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) has inspected the tunnel and has recommended the removal of loose rock and additional stabilization of the remaining rock in the area where the hazard exists. This will require the installation of rock bolts and high tension mesh. ADOT&PF has contracted with Advanced Blasting to perform the required repairs.
