Anchorage Daily News
By ZAZ HOLLANDER

Moose struggling through this winter's deep, wet snow north of Talkeetna gravitate to the cleared paths of the Alaska Railroad tracks.

They don't leave the tracks for anything. Not even the trains that run twice a day.

Between late November and mid-December, trains killed a dozen moose in a particularly snowy and narrow 100-mile corridor from Talkeetna to the Susitna River, according to statistics supplied by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Alaska's transportation system hard hit by high fuel prices - 11/26/04
Kenai Peninsula Online
BY CLAIRE CHANDLER

Despite Alaska Railroad Corp.'s November fuel surcharge of 10.5 percent for transporting freight, it is still paying more than it budgeted for fuel, according the public affairs officer Tim Thompson.
"It's definitely going to hit us this year. We just aren't sure how hard," he said. "You can only absorb so much. It makes us have to look long-term, make adjustments where we can (and) try to recover cost where we can."

McKeen car status - 11/23/04
Submitted by Gina Hollomon, Executive Director, Anchorage Historic Properties, inc.
We are moving right along with her. Our next major step is to decide what kind of running gear to use. That way if we have to modify the frame, we can do so while that is easy. I would be happy to send you photos if you are interested in posting them to your website. She is a pile of rust and rivets now...mainly rust...but she will be 'wearing red paint' again before we know it! We are on a four year plan to have the restoration complete by her 100th birthday, July 2008. I fell in love with this train many years ago and can't tell you how happy I have been to be a major player in her restoration.

The plan is to obtain two, good quality, standard 85 foot baggage cars and have them overhauled so the railroad can retire the 110 and 111.

SD70MACs haul North Pole oil - 11/1/04
Submitted by Art Chase

I may be behind the curve on this news: I caught the sounds last night (1 am) of what I thought was some very different horns on the North Pole/Eielson Branch. The SD70MAC's are being used on the North Pole oil cans! So I watched for them again hoping to capture them in the light. Numbers 4009 and 4013 were working the branch and boy they looked nice. Towing the can like they nothing.

New passenger cars - 10/15/04
Mathew Abbey
Rail Division Manager- McKinley Explorer
Holland America Line
We are expecting two new Colorado Rail Cars in June of 2005, #1058 and 1059. These will be arranged slightly differently, as they will be stand-alone and not split a kitchen like the A/B car sets we currently use.

Also, Budd cars 507, 508, 512 and 1394 will be rebranded for Alaska Rail Tours in the spring, but they will keep the paint with the mountail stripe. "McKinley Explorer" will say "Alaska Rail Tours ", and the Westours label will be removed and replaced with the new ART logo.

We are going to fix out identity issues this year. We will be "Holland America Line" with the "egg logo" on all of our busses and rail cars. "McKinley Explorer" will stay of course, but we are dropping Westours from all revenue equipment. The mothballed cars we won't change of course.

New Alaska Railroad passenger cars - 10/13/04
Jody Moore, webmaster
Luxury Under Glass: The Ultradome Experience
I got word yesterday that Alaska Railroad's new cars will be numbered ARR 651 and 652. Early reports also had these cars being paired with a high-level diner. The only ones I can think of on ARR's roster that fit the bill are ARR 451 and 452, which started life as Pullman bilevel commuter cars before being hollowed out and refurbished by none other than our favorite luxury dome and DMU builder for service on the Florida Fun Train. These cars were originally the Arcade and Theater cars on the FFT, and were converted into very stylish salon diners by the Alaska Railroad after purchase. Does anybody know if these cars will actually be the ones used behind the domes?

During the week of 25 October, two more EMD people will be here with the software to install and test the units. The railroad will use load boxes to test initially, then will connect to passenger cars.

Luxury Under Glass: The Ultradome Experience
The latest updates to the Ultradome Experience website are up, with a special announcement. I am pleased to be able to report that the two as yet unnamed cars under construction by Colorado Railcar are being built for Holland America. The cars, 1058 and 1059, will be considered C cars, and will be a slight departure from the previous A-B pairs. You can read all about the specifications of the new cars - including their names - by following the links from the news page.

Of realignments and new MACs - 10/06/04
Submitted by an anonymous source

With the realignment effort complete between Anchorage and Reeves (approx. milepost 117.3 and 128.4), the speed limit has been increased to 45 mph. A slight wobble through this section has been noted and work crews are currently tweaking this section.

The new 43XX SD70MACs are working out well from a train service worker's point of view. Inside the cab it is quieter since there are not blower fans for the CRTs. They load smoother and have fewer software glitches. This is probably due to the fact they have been tweaked and are also running Windows XP (as opposed to Windows NT on the older MACs). The exterior has several differences such as flared radiators (obvious) and a bulge on the engineer's side (less obvious). The bulge is probably the result of a turbo unit.

Passenger car Nos. 551-554 are being refurbished over the winter. It is basically a replacement in kind. There will be new seat frames with new cushions on either side of the tables just as is the current layout. Carpet will be changed. Wall laminate colors may be changed depending on time and money budget. Seats will be manufactured by a vendor and installed by Mechanical forces.
