after it left the mainline going up to Eska and Chickaloon. The track
below is standard gauge and the one above is 3 foot gauge going up Moose
Creek to the coal mines. The photo is looking RR South toward the Matanuska

to hang on with one hand and use the other to eat with. This is only about
half of the party. |

The location is along the Matanuska River which
would be against the base of the mountains in the background. The mountain
at the left rear is Kings Mt. and the the railroad continues up to
Chickaloon and the Navy coal mine and camp. Best guess this is at present
day Sutton where the railroad spur to Jonesville and Eska take off to the
left up the hill. The railroad built a coal washing plant here as
well. Considering the primitive conditions, no tie plates and light rail
this is early on. The camp is still active with the tent frames in
good condition and the board walks still in place. My guess is spring
1918 in early May before the trees leafed out or the mosquitos took wing.
The "black old tramp" on the velocipede is in management
based on his campaign hat and tie. Hip boots and heavy gabardine shirt
were business attire at the time. |
