"This is the original coal tipple on the Moose Creek Branch after it left the mainline going up to Eska and Chickaloon. The track below is standard gauge and the one above is 3 foot gauge going up Moose Creek to the coal mines. The photo is looking RR South toward the Matanuska River. -- Pat Durand

Velocipede The location is along the Matanuska River which would be against the base of the mountains in the background. The mountain at the left rear is Kings Mt. and the the railroad continues up to Chickaloon and the Navy coal mine and camp. Best guess this is at present day Sutton where the railroad spur to Jonesville and Eska take off to the left up the hill.   The railroad built a coal washing plant here as well. Considering the primitive conditions, no tie plates and light rail this is early on.   The camp is still active with the tent frames in good condition and the board walks still in place.   My guess is spring 1918 in early May before the trees leafed out or the mosquitos took wing. The "black old tramp" on the velocipede is in management based on his campaign hat and tie.   Hip boots and heavy gabardine shirt were business attire at the time.
