On October 25 my wife and I took the Autumn Colors Express round trip from Huntington to Hinton, West Virginia. Passenger cars from all over the United States were leased for excursions over a three day period. We chose to take the cheapest passenger car. Saturday's train was sold out so in an effort to fill Friday's excursion free upgrades were offered. By coincidence, our schedule had changed so we readily snapped up the deal. The train was pulled by three Amtrak units and featured such former passenger cars as those having run on the Broadway Limited, Twin Cities Hiawathas, Northern Pacific, Empire Builder, California Zephyr, North Coast Limited, Frisco Railway and Overland Route. By some stoke of luck we were assigned the Summit View SLRG 554 which was formerly Holland America McKinley Explorer #554 Eklutna! Alaska seems to follow us wherever we go.
You will find a YouTube video of the train here.
